COURSES
As a BHS-approved centre and examination centre, we’re committed to helping riders learn more about the horses and how to care for them. We offer a range of courses for adult riders – you can come just for fun or to prepare for British Horse Society exams. For children, we run a Pony Club session and other activities – see our Kids page for details. To book any of our courses, please contact us by phone or email.
Stable management courses
We offer two options for riders wanting to work on their horse care skills without taking exams:
From the Ground Up: this is a BHS foundation course that runs on a rolling basis continually throughout the year. Ideal for those who are completely new to horses and those want to broaden their knowledge of the daily care horses need. Groups are limited to 6 people so you learn ‘hands-on’ in a safe environment.
Following the completion of the foundation course, those who want to take it further can move on to the BHS Stage 1 care course.
For the more experienced students, we provide horse care courses up to BHS Stage 4.
If you wish to book a private course that is tailored to your needs, get in touch with the team and we will arrange it.
Ride & Groom: This one-hour course combines riding with looking after your favourite horse. You’ll learn about feeding, grooming and tack care. This course runs all year round – an ideal present for a friend (or yourself!)
BHS Stage 1, 2, 3 exams
As Barnfield is an authorised training and examination centre, we offer combined riding and stable management courses for those wanting to work towards British Horse Society examinations (Stages One, Two & Three).
Each session combines an hour of riding with an hour of hands-on stable management teaching – perfect for mastering both sides of the exam. The courses run for 8-10 weeks before the exam date.

BHS Ride Safe exam
Ride Safe is the British Horse Society training course designed to make sure you and your horse are safe on roads, tracks and bridleways.
Barnfield Riding School runs a pre-exam course to make sure you have all the knowledge you need, plus you can take the exam on our friendly, safe horses & ponies.
